2009 Radio Days

Radio Days

The Hazard Perry County Senior Center celebrated its 38th WSGS Radio Day by receiving $100,000 in pledges which broke all previous records. The center thanks all of the local businesses, the coal industry and private individuals who so graciously gave to support the services for senior adults in Hazard and Perry County. A special thanks to Haven King for all of his efforts in organizing the coal companies. Thanks to Pine Branch Coal Sales employees and truck drivers and David and Susie Duff for their contribution of over $22,500 to our program. Also thanks to Representative Fitz Steele for joining us in raising funds for this important cause.

Intergenerational Prom

Intergenerational Prom

On April 9th, the First Federal Center at Hazard Community and Technical College was transformed into a beautiful, musical place for the Seventh Annual Intergenerational Prom. Hazard High School Junior and Senior paired up with senior adults from the senior center, LKLP Compassionate Hearts Adult Day, Hazard Nursing Home and the East Kentucky Veterans Center for a fun afternoon. Over 250 people enjoyed great music, dancing, food and prizes.

March 16, 2009, Perry County local officials donned hairnets, gloves and aprons to serve lunch to 70 senior adults. Leaders for Lunches, as it is called by Kentucky's Department for Aging and Independent Living, asks local officials to focus attention on the much needed and significantly underfunded senior adult nutrition program. It also provides an opportunity for local officials to serve, hands on, the people in their communities. The senior adults truly appreciated the service of our community leaders and enjoyed the day meeting and socializing with them.

On February 6, 2009, the Hazard Perry County Senior Citizens, Inc. was presented with a $10,000 grant to initiate evening wellness programs at the senior center located in Perry County Park. The proposed program will work in two parts. First, the senior center will partner with Hazard Community and Technical College to form a fitness instructor academy to train up to 24 people to become yoga and aerobics instructors for the community. Secondly some of these instructors will receive additional training through the American Senior Fitness Association and will begin evening classes for people 50 and older at the senior center.

Melissa Vermillion, Director, says the center is working toward becoming a hub of activity in the evening with people taking yoga and aerobic classes, people using the new wellness equipment, and people taking health and nutrition as well as other classes. Many younger seniors are still working or have other obligations and are unable to participate in activities offered at the senior center during the day. The senior center is becoming more flexible and progressive to meet the needs of all senior adults. Watch for evening programs, classes and special events to be scheduled in our local newspaper.
